Stump removal service
Professional removal of tree stumps
When you’ve had a tree removed, in some cases it is recommended to also remove the tree stump. This can prevent it suckering (new shoots growing from the stump or roots), becoming diseased or being a trip hazard. It will also give you unencumbered ground for planting new plants.
We have the experience and machinery to safely remove stumps of all shapes, sizes and locations. All the stump and root remains will be chipped on site, and we can either remove these or leave them with you if you wish to use them as mulch.
Frequently asked questions
On the whole it is best to remove old tree stumps. Leaving them in the ground can cause issues including:
- Suckering – where new shoots appear from the stump or roots, as the tree tries to grow back.
- Disease – rotting wood can encourage pests and diseases, which may then spread to heathy plants.
- Trip hazard – as the stump rots down and becomes smaller, this can create a trip hazard in your garden.
The presence of the stump and root system will also make it difficult to re-plant in that location.
Our experts will advise you on how essential it is to remove the stump at your free initial consultation, taking into account the risks and impact on the surrounding environment.
We’ll visit your site before any work starts to thoroughly assess the situation. If there is a danger of damaging pipes we’ll discuss the options with you.
This will vary depending on the size of the stump, its depth and the ease of access. When we assess the stump we’ll be able to give you an indication of how long the removal will take.
Stump grinding will remove the stump and the thick roots immediately surrounding the stump. The smaller, deeper roots are left in the soil to rot down naturally.
This removes the risk of suckering and disease, and frees up the site for re-planting, without the disruption to the soil which full root removal causes.
In a few cases (such as willows), trees can regrow from deeper roots. Our expert will advise you at the initial consultation if this is a risk.
We can either remove these or, if you prefer, leave them on site for you to use as mulch or a compost additive.
Yes, our stump removal service will clear the ground so there’s plenty of space to plant a new tree.
Note that some soil borne diseases (such as apple replant disease or ash dieback) persist in the soil even after the tree has been removed. If this is the case, replanting with the same type of tree may fail.
