What are tree surveys and why do we need them?

Tree surveys are comprehensive assessments of trees and vegetation within a specific area, often conducted in relation to development projects, urban planning, or land management. They gather detailed information about the health, age, species, and location of trees, which is crucial for various planning needs.

Purpose of Tree Surveys

Environmental Impact Assessment

Assess how trees and vegetation might be affected by proposed developments.

Preservation Planning

Identify trees that should be preserved and integrated into new developments.

Regulatory Compliance

Ensure adherence to local laws and regulations regarding tree preservation.

Components of a Tree Survey

Tree Inventory

A detailed list of trees in the survey area, including species, size (diameter at breast height), and health condition.

Mapping

Geographical mapping of trees using tools like GIS to visualize their locations in relation to proposed development plans.

Condition Assessment

Evaluation of tree health and potential risks, such as disease or structural stability.

Benefits

Sustainable Planning

Support environmentally friendly development by preserving valuable trees and green spaces.

Enhancing Aesthetics

Maintain the natural beauty of a site and contribute to the overall landscape design.

Biodiversity Support

Help protect habitats for urban wildlife and promote biodiversity.

Application in Planning

Site Development

Community Projects

Guide decisions in park developments, road construction, and urban renewal efforts.

Basic Visual Tree Assessment (VTA)

We also offer a more basic visual tree assessment (VTA) service, this is a basic tree survey undertaken by one of our VTA trained arborists and not a surveyor. If you are worried about one or several of your trees, this can often be all that is needed,

Although this service is not completed to BS 5837, it is undertaken by arborists who work with trees every day and will be able to offer some piece of mind and insight into the condition of your trees.

Where further investigation is needed for example the use of a micro drill resistor graph to determine the extent of decay in a tree stem, we would refer you on to one of our trained surveyors who can undertake a full tree survey.
