Hedge cutting and management
Professional hedge management services to keep your hedges healthy and in pristine condition
Hedges are the ultimate garden multitaskers; defining boundaries, reducing noise and air pollution, creating windbreaks, and providing a safe habitat for wildlife.
Even the most natural hedge needs regular care and maintenance. With our experience and expertise, we assess each hedge and provide tailored solutions to keep it in the best possible condition.
From carefully pruning young hedges for strong bushy growth, to giving old hedges a new lease of life, our experts understand the challenges and always deliver effective solutions.
Where a hedge cannot be saved or a new boundary is needed, we offer a tailored hedge planting service. This includes advising on the most appropriate species as well as supply, planting and ongoing maintenance.
We provide regular hedge trimming and maintenance services, or one-off bespoke work to tackle difficult or challenging hedge situations.
Frequently asked questions
Many people think that new hedges need to be left to grow for a few years, but this can create a thin, straggly and poorly developed hedge.
Regular pruning from the outset will develop a strong and healthy network of branches, which fill out with bushy growth.
Established hedges require maintenance pruning to ensure dense and healthy growth, whilst maintaining the hedge at a suitable size.
Pruning may be required once or twice a year depending on the variety of hedge and style of presentation. Formal hedges (ones with crisp edges used to define lines and boundaries) may need cutting two to three times a year, whilst informal hedges with softer edges may only require cutting once a year to keep them in check.
Different types of hedges are better pruned at certain times of the year, for example conifer hedges are best pruned earlier in the season to ensure effective regrowth.
When trimming hedges from March to August, thorough nest checks should be undertaken to protect wildlife and nesting birds. We’re always careful to ensure that our hedge cutting minimises any impact on wildlife or the surrounding area.
Yes, we can come to you as often as needed to keep your hedge healthy and looking neat. The frequency and timing of our visits will depend on the type of hedge and how formally you’d like it to be trimmed.
Yes, we haven’t yet met a hedge we couldn’t trim! We provide tree surgery as well as hedge management services, so we are trained and equipped to work at heights safely.
Leylandii hedges (Cupressus × leylandii) need to be trimmed regularly as they can’t be renovated if they have grown too large. The old wood in the centre of the hedge won’t produce new shoots, so if you cut it back too hard it won’t recover.
However, other conifer hedges can reshoot from old wood, and it can sometimes be difficult to tell what is (or isn’t) a leylandii. Our team will be happy to advise on whether your hedge can be cut back to the extent you need.
Yes, absolutely! We can help you select the best species for your new hedge, then source, plant and maintain it. Our services include regular visits to stake, feed and trim your hedge, ensuring that it thrives and grows to the required shape and size.
We also offer clearance services to remove previous hedges or stumps.
